DHARAMSHALA: The Dalai Lama on Monday said that his long-cherished aspiration has been fulfilled today, as the Tibetan people put in place Lobsang Sangay as the democratically elected leader vested with full political and responsibility.
Addressing a gathering at the swearing in ceremony of Sangay, the Dalai Lama said, "Today is also an important day in the more than 2000-year long history of Tibet. Even during the reign of the three religious kings, Tibet maintained equal stature with its neighbouring countries."
The 14th Dalai Lama said that today is a proud day for all Tibetan people who had participated in the democratic elections.
"My most cherished aspiration has been fulfilled. Tibetans are not allowed to even express their views and opinions freely, let alone participate in democratic elections, but I am sure that the they would be proud of the steps that we have taken," Dalai Lama said.
In a statement issued here earlier the Dalai Lama had mentioned that after coming into the exile he had made sincere efforts to establish a democratic system of governance in last more than 30 years. "Now, I would lead Tibet in spiritual affairs," he had said.
Sangay said in his first press conference that he is not here to replace the role of Dalai Lama but to fulfill his vision. "I am here not as a result of my personal achievement but as a result of hard work and sacrifices by elder generations in Tibet and in exile," he said.
The relation of the Tibetans with the Dalai Lamas is about 400 years old. They were the spiritual and political head of Tibet. But after the devolution of powers to the democratically elected leader, the Dalai Lama is no more the political head of the Tibetans.
