Schools can be sparse in rural areas of Nepal.
It's not uncommon for children to walk several
hours each way just to go to school. Further,
the schools that do exist are often ramshackle
collections of crumbling bricks, loose sheet metal
and dirt floors.
Dharmashop.com wants to rally our community together
and raise the funds necessary to build a school
in rural Nepal with our friends at Room to Read.

The Dharma Shop and our
partner, Room To Read understands that a
child's education begins with an adequate
learning environment. One of Room to Read's
primary charters is to improve this environment
by aiding with the construction of new schools
and the repair of old ones. |
|
Rather than simply building
or paying for a new school, Room to Read
materially involves the local community
where the school is to be built. The communities
are asked to provide some of the funding,
land, materials and/or labor required to
build the school. Matching funds from the
community allows us to effectively double
donation money. Just $5,000 to $10,000 in
donations is enough for us to build a school
that will support over 150 students. |

This model of community ownership produces
a deep sense of commitment, and ultimately
more lasting impact on education in rural
areas.
