The bodhi seed holds immense significance in Buddhist traditions, particularly within Tibetan Buddhism. These small, often bumpy beads carry the weight of symbolism, reminding practitioners of their own potential for awakening.
The Seed of Enlightenment
The word "bodhi" itself translates from Sanskrit as "enlightenment" or "awakening." It's under the Bodhi tree, a fig tree (Ficus religiosa), that Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha. So, the bodhi seed becomes a potent symbol – a tiny embodiment of the potential for profound spiritual growth.
A Tibetan Tradition
Bodhi seeds are most commonly used in malas, prayer beads used for counting mantras and meditations. In Tibetan Buddhism, these malas are especially revered. The seeds themselves are believed to hold auspicious energy, believed to enhance the potency of prayers and mantras recited while using the mala.
A Journey Inward
Beyond their role in prayer, bodhi seeds serve as a constant reminder of the path towards enlightenment. Each seed, with its unique markings and natural texture, is like a tiny teacher. As we finger the beads during meditation or daily wear, we contemplate the potential for awakening that lies dormant within us, just as the potential for a mighty tree lies within a seed.
Beyond the Bead
The symbolism of the bodhi seed extends beyond the mala. The seed's hard exterior represents the challenges and obstacles we face on the path to enlightenment. Yet, within lies the potential for immense growth and transformation. Just as a seed cracks open to reveal new life, so too can we break free from the limitations of our ego and experience spiritual awakening.
A Seed for Your Own Path
Whether you're a seasoned practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism or simply drawn to the symbolism of the bodhi seed, incorporating these beads into your meditation practice can be a powerful way to connect with your own inner potential for enlightenment. As you hold the seeds and recite your mantras, remember the potential for awakening that lies within you, waiting to be nurtured and brought to bloom.
DharmaShop only sources high quality, authentic, and ethically sourced Bodhi seeds from the Himalayas. We have worked with the same artisans since 1999 to ensure our sourcing and quality. Shop our Bodhi seed collection by clicking here or scroll below!

But does it actually work? While research is ongoing, there's evidence suggesting that incense may offer some calming and stress-reducing benefits that can be helpful in managing anxiety. Let's explore how:
The Power of Scent:
Incense releases aromatic smoke carrying various scents. These scents can trigger the release of calming neurotransmitters in the brain, like serotonin and dopamine. These chemicals play a crucial role in promoting relaxation and reducing stress, potentially easing anxiety symptoms.
Mindfulness in the Ritual:
The act of lighting and attending to burning incense can be a mindful practice. It encourages you to focus on the present moment, drawing your attention away from worries and anxieties. This mindful approach can be a powerful tool for calming a racing mind and promoting relaxation.
Creating a Serene Atmosphere:
The gentle fragrance and soft smoke of incense can create a calming and peaceful atmosphere in your space. This can be particularly helpful when practicing relaxation techniques like meditation or simply unwinding after a long day.
Important Considerations:
It's crucial to remember that incense shouldn't be considered a replacement for professional medical advice or treatment for anxiety. If you're struggling with anxiety, seeking help from a healthcare professional is essential.
Here are some additional points to keep in mind if you're considering using incense for anxiety:
While the science on incense and anxiety is still evolving, it offers a potential natural approach to managing anxiety symptoms through aromatherapy, mindfulness, and creating a relaxing environment. Remember to use it responsibly and consult a healthcare professional if you need further guidance.
]]>Functionality: Knots act as spacers between the beads, making it easier to finger each bead during meditation and keep track of your mantras. This separation prevents the beads from sliding freely, which can be distracting during meditation.
Durability: Knots secure the beads on the string. If the mala breaks, the individual beads are less likely to scatter, making it easier to restring them.
Symbolism: In some traditions, the knots themselves are imbued with symbolic meaning. They can represent momentary obstacles encountered on the path to enlightenment, which can be overcome through meditation and spiritual practice.
It's important to note that not all mala beads are knotted. This is a matter of personal preference and doesn't affect the overall meaning or purpose of the mala. We hope this helps!

That said, we have surrounded ourselves with Singing Bowls since 1999. Just like certain songs or sounds in nature, sonic waves can make us feel at peace - physically and mentally. Different tones and soundscapes hitting different parts of our mind and being, the vibrations grounding and centering us. But how do we focus on specific energy centers?
The seven healing frequencies are a set of specific musical tones associated with the seven chakras, which are energy centers in the body. Many believe each frequency is believed to resonate with a particular chakra and influence its corresponding physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects.
Here's a breakdown of the seven frequencies and their effects. Click each title/link to view and listen to bowls of that example...
1. 396 Hz - Root Chakra: This frequency is said to stimulate the root chakra, located at the base of the spine. It's associated with feelings of stability, grounding, and security. Potential benefits include overcoming fear, anxiety, and challenges related to survival and basic needs.
2. 417 Hz - Sacral Chakra: Located in the lower abdomen, the sacral chakra is linked to creativity, sensuality, and emotional expression. This frequency is believed to help release negative emotions, past traumas, and blockages in this area, promoting feelings of joy, peace, and connection.
3. 528 Hz - Solar Plexus Chakra: Situated around the navel, the solar plexus chakra governs personal power, self-confidence, and willpower. The 528 Hz frequency is often referred to as the "Love Frequency" and is said to promote healing, transformation, and manifestation. It's believed to help overcome self-doubt, limitations, and emotional wounds.
4. 639 Hz - Heart Chakra: Located in the center of the chest, the heart chakra is associated with love, compassion, and empathy. This frequency is said to foster emotional balance, forgiveness, and connection with others. It's believed to help heal grief, anger, and relationship issues.
5. 741 Hz - Throat Chakra: Located in the throat, this chakra governs communication, self-expression, and truth. The 741 Hz frequency is said to cleanse and purify the voice, promoting clear communication, creativity, and removing blockages in expressing oneself authentically.
6. 852 Hz - Third Eye Chakra: Located between the eyebrows, the third eye chakra is associated with intuition, wisdom, and connection to the universe. This frequency is believed to enhance psychic abilities, spiritual awareness, and open-mindedness. It's said to help overcome illusions and limitations in perception.
7. 963 Hz - Crown Chakra: Located at the top of the head, the crown chakra connects us to our higher consciousness, spirituality, and oneness with all things. The 963 Hz frequency is believed to promote enlightenment, letting go, and connecting to a higher purpose. It's said to help overcome ego limitations and connect with a sense of divine love and unity.

]]>Singing bowls have captivated people for years, beckoning with their mesmerizing sounds and potential for calm, relaxation, and healing. Singing Bowls were strictly made of a mix of metals, delivering a long resonating golden tone.
But in the last 15-20 years or so, a new crystal bowl has gained popularity. These bowls are typically machine made in China, which is not to discount their gorgeous sound and tuned accuracy when discussing notes and hz. Below we will discuss some of the properties of each, and differences between the two...
Quartz Crystal: Contemporary Sounds
The high-purity quartz amplifies and focuses sound, creating long, sustained notes. Think clean, clear chimes, washing over you like waves on a tranquil shore. These bowls are often associated with New Age practices and contemporary sound healing, making them ideal for modern mindfulness rituals.
Metal Majesty: The Original
Close your eyes and picture a blacksmith's hammer striking a gong. That's the rich, grounded resonance of a metal singing bowl. Traditionally made from a blend of seven metals, symbolizing alignment and connection, these bowls pulsate with complex overtones; soaring through sonic landscapes. They may not be as easy to sing as their crystal counterparts, but their deep, warm vibrations leave you feeling grounded and centered, like roots digging deep into the earth.
Metal bowls whisper of spiritual wisdom. Their roots lie in Tibetan Buddhism and Himalayan rituals, where they've been used for centuries for meditation, ceremonies, and offerings. If you seek a connection to these traditions or crave a sound that stirs your soul from its core, a metal bowl might be your guide.
The Verdict: A Symphony of Choice
Full disclaimer: DharmaShop specializes in authentic Singing Bowls handmade in Nepal by generational artisans, so we are doing our best to not be biased.
Ultimately, the best singing bowl is the one that sings to you. Not just in sound but in story and craftsmanship. Try a few out, listen closely, and feel the resonance within. Do you crave the ethereal clarity of crystal or the earthy depth of hand-hammered metal? Perhaps you'll find magic in both!
No matter your choice, remember, singing bowls are more than instruments; they're portals to inner peace and self-discovery. So, take a deep breath, raise the mallet, and let the sounds of your soul begin.

]]>Mala beads, also known as japamalas, are beaded necklaces or bracelets that are used in prayer or meditation. They are traditionally made with 108 beads, plus one larger bead, called a guru bead, or a number divisible of 108. The number 108 is considered sacred in many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. It is believed to represent the 108 Upanishads, the 108 names of the Buddha, or the 108 energy meridians in the body.
The history of mala beads is somewhat murky, but they are believed to have originated in India around the 8th century BCE. They were originally used by Hindu sadhus, or holy men, to help them focus their minds during meditation. Over time, the use of mala beads spread to other religions, including Buddhism.
Mala beads are typically made from a variety of materials, including wood, seeds, gemstones, and precious metals. The type of material used is often chosen based on its spiritual properties. For example, rudraksha seeds are believed to have protective and calming properties, while lotus seeds are believed to promote purity and compassion.
Our Mala Beads are hand-strung in Kathmandu, in the shadow of Boudhanath Stupa by our talented Mala artisans. They will always be authentic and ethically sourced.
Tibetan singing bowls are rooted in the ancient shamanistic Bon Po culture of the Himalayas, predating Buddhism. These unique instruments made their way into Buddhist practice as aids to meditation and the journey to enlightenment. When struck or circled with a mallet, they emit a powerful, captivating tone that instantly calms the mind and induces a meditative state. This makes them an integral part of yoga, meditation, and sound therapy.
Singing bowls are made traditionally from a bronze alloy containing copper and tin, known as "bell metal", but they may also include traces of other metals. They are hammered by hand, each blow resonating with the maker's intention. This hand-forging process leads to each bowl producing a unique, rich, multi-layered sound that is as individual as a human voice.
The mystique of Tibetan singing bowls lies not only in their sound but also in the way they allow us to tap into different states of consciousness. They align our mind, body, and soul, creating space for healing and harmony. The vibrations produced by these bowls can help reduce stress, align the chakras, and aid in pain relief.
At DharmaShop.com, we hold a deep appreciation for the cultural and spiritual significance of these Tibetan treasures. Over time, we've received numerous requests from our customers for singing bowl sets, each carrying a distinct note corresponding to the seven chakras, enabling a full range of sound healing. While building these sets in Kathmandu, we also started to build sets that resonate together, we play every bowl, and as we started to build sets our customers responded.
We listened. Our priority has always been to meet the spiritual and wellness needs of our customers. We understand the value that singing bowls add to your practices, and in response to your feedback, we've curated a collection of high-quality, hand-hammered Tibetan singing bowl sets.

When choosing a singing bowl for meditation, your own personal preferences are paramount. Some factors to consider include the size and weight of the bowl, the sound it produces, and the materials it is made of. In essence, if the sound or size of the bowl is uncomfortable, it won't be a good partner in meditation.
Do you plan to hold the bowl in your hand as you meditate? If so, make sure to choose a smaller bowl that is easy to handle and does not distract from your focus and practice. DharmaShop has our bowls measurements listed and can be organized by size.
If you prefer the bowl to sit at your side as you meditate, and you're not using it constantly, you can put sound preference ahead of size. DharmaShop has sound samples for every singing bowl to make sure your comfortable with the tone.
When thinking of a bowl for meditation, I immediately think of a bowl with a smooth, very low, resonating tone. That is because it's my preference when it comes to the sound of our singing bowls. You want to find a bowl whose sound brings you what you're looking for out of meditation. Maybe a higher clean and sparkly tone perks you up, or starts each session off strong. Or maybe a lower tone brings that calm throughout your practice. Some of our customers make sure they even have one of each depending on their intention for that day.
