A mala is a string of beads used for counting mantras. The traditional number of beads for a Tibetan mala is 108, but smaller numbers such as 54, 27, 21 and 18 are also common. Spacer beads are not often included in this number but can be a personal choice for ease of use or decoration. Additional feature such as strands of counter beads, tassels, and symbolic jewels add meaning for the wearer.
Each bead represents the number of times you recite the mantra of your choice, which is why you can either use a full 108 mala one time around, or a wrist mala multiple times around to achieve the 108 count. You are welcome to wear your mala around the neck or wrist when not in use! Many of our clients say this is a wonderful reminder of their practice in their day to day life!
