Bone and Skull Impermanence Mala

  • I have never had such strong positive reactions to a mala before.  I sold one of these right off my neck at a Starbucks one morning.  I wear this mala often and get comments all day long!
  • Made in Nepal, it features 108 naturally stained water buffalo bone beads with hand carved bone skull beads.
  • This mala serves as a powerful reminder to be here now and to live in the present moment; because nothing is permanent, everything is possible.

My Buddhist practice revolves around impermanence.  We live only in the present moment and it is helpful to remember that nothing lasts.  Skulls are featured prominently in Tibetan symbolism and many of our DharmaShop customers are fond of this reminder that nothing lasts forever.

A note about bone beads:  In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

Mala measures approximately 36 inches around.  Beads are about 10mm.  Skull spacers are 10mm by 12mm.

Bone and Skull Impermanence Mala

It’s great. Helps with focus when I take time to ground myself and be in the moment. Helps remind of what is really important. Well built. Robust. Good quality. Recommended.

The Bone and Skull Impermanence Mala is awesome.

By Western sensibilities, a necklace made of "bones and skulls" is odd and somewhat dark. Not so, this. Quite the opposite, in fact. I'm not a Buddhist, but I find the symbolism of impermanence to be comforting; a powerful reminder to be present and to value the time I have with people I care about. This mala calls to my mind Kind Solomon's "other" magic ring: The one inscribed with the maxim: "This, too, shall pass." Difficult times can be endured and happy times are to be treasured. Perhaps, this review is a bit too philosophical, so how about this: I absolutely treasure this mala. I use it to count my breaths. Then again, each breath is impermanent, too. Go figure.
