Bone and Skull Impermanence Mala

48   |

I have never had such strong positive reactions to a mala before.  I sold one of these right off my neck at a Starbucks one morning.  I wear this mala often and get comments all day long!  Features naturally stained water buffalo bone beads with carved bone skull beads.

My Buddhist practice revolves around impermanence.  We live only in the present moment and it is helpful to remember that nothing lasts.  Skulls are featured prominently in Tibetan symbolism and many of our DharmaShop customers are fond of this reminder that nothing lasts forever.

A note about bone beads:  In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, utensils, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

108 10mm water buffalo-bone beads with 4 skulls, approximately 34 inch total circumference.  Handmade in Nepal.

A wonderful mala!

I was attracted to this mala from the moment I saw it and once I understood the materials and meaning behind it, I knew that this was perfect. It is a heavier mala and it's substantial when I wear it, but that is what I love about it. I love all the details and tiny elements that are incorporated in it. It was shipped quickly and with so much care. A thank you to the DharmaShop and I will be ordering from them again!
